What’s inside
This is the same fund, fee and contribution check we run on a call, written down. No jargon, no sales pitch — just what to look for and why it matters.
One setting, age 30 to 65
A 30-year-old on $80,000, contributing 3.5% with a matching employer contribution. Nothing changes except the fund they sit in.
Same in
That’s roughly $233,000 apart — from a single setting most people have never looked at. Start at 25 instead of 30 and the gap widens to over $350,000.
Illustrative example only, not a guarantee of returns. Figures assume constant contributions and fees over the full term, after fees and tax. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns. A growth fund also moves further up and down along the way, which matters a great deal if you need the money soon — the guide covers when it doesn’t suit.
Why it’s worth ten minutes
KiwiSaver is the largest investment most New Zealanders will ever own, and hardly any of us have had a conversation with anyone about it.

FMA KiwiSaver Annual Report 2025, figures as at 31 March 2025. That second figure is an association, not proof that advice alone caused the difference — but the behaviours that come with advice are the ones that build a balance.
Who’s behind the guide
Journey Mortgages is a Christchurch-based mortgage and KiwiSaver advice firm. Alex and Sam both run the free 15-minute KiwiSaver review, and we advise on five providers: Generate, Booster, Milford, Fisher Funds and NZ Funds.
